RESOLUTIONS: WILL YOU BE ONE OF THE TWELVE (PERCENT)?

As the new year begins many people challenge themselves to be better in some way than they were last year. These resolutions reflect the goals that we set for ourselves, goals that will require effort and dedication. Some may want to live a healthier lifestyle or lose weight which will require a more balanced diet and time spent exercising. Some want to save more money for a rainy day which may require them to reevaluate their spending habits and make some sacrifices. Others resolve to be better spouses or friends which requires extra time devoted to those relationships. Resolutions can often be difficult to keep, and many give up before they reach their goal. Statistics have shown that regardless of the type of goal made, only 12% of people who set New Year's resolutions actually reach them. As Christians we should embrace the new year as an opportunity to reflect on our service to God and resolve to do more in the coming year; to become a better Christian.

What does improving our relationship with Christ require? Make it part of your goal to be in regular church attendance. Nothing keeps you on track like surrounding yourselves with others who share the same goal; the same statistics showed that it will increase your chances of success by 10%. Resolve to read your Bible daily, if you don't already. Studying God's word is one of the most enriching activities we can do as a Christian as it allows God to reveal himself and His will for our life to us. The most important requirement for achieving our resolution is to be a better witness. It is not enough to work to improve your devotion to God if your work never extend beyond yourself. Telling others about the good news of Jesus is our most important job. Resolve to invite others to church, tell others about Jesus, and make Him part of your conversations. Imagine what miracles we could see in 2010 if we all work together to seek God's power in our lives and in our church. Let's all be one of the twelve percent that hang in there and see their goals through to the end. This year make a New Year's Resolution to become more malleable, to be pressed and hammered into shape without cracking or breaking.
